Almost 20 per cent of Australian honey samples found to not be pure

Australian honey purity testing map

A 2018 investigation found that almost 20 per cent of Australian honey samples tested were not pure. Instead of genuine, unadulterated honey from the hive, they’d been diluted with cheaper syrups. Read the full report by Adele Ferguson and Chris Gillett.

It’s exactly the kind of story that explains why we’re so fussy about Australian honey purity at Bizzy Beehive. Every jar we sell comes from our own hives in Rural Victoria. We don’t blend anything in, we don’t add anything, and we don’t pasteurise anything out. If a honey can’t be traced back to a real hive, it’s worth asking a few questions about Australian honey purity before you buy it.

We think traceability is the simplest way to prove purity. Isabel and the team harvest, extract and bottle every batch themselves. If you ever want to know which hive your jar came from, you can just ask us — either at one of our farmers market stalls or through our contact page.

We never feed our bees sugar, and we never heat our honey past hive temperature. That’s what raw actually means, and it’s the whole reason Australian honey purity matters to us in the first place.
